A German Gothic horseman's hammer,

late 15th/early 16th century. Strongly formed iron head retained by a transverse bolt, the latter attached to a short belt hook with acorn finial. Small rectangular hammer on a chamfered neck, tapering rear fluke of stiff-diamond section, closed socket cut with a raised kite-shield on both sides. On its original wooden haft, the upper half entirely encased by four iron straps each extending to a long slender drop shaped finial. The basal cap matching and fitted with matching straps over the sides. In untouched heavily patinated condition throughout. Length 54 cm.
