AXEL GUTTMANN COLLECTION

Lot Nr.332

A Chalcidian helmet,

. A curved, decorative band riveted to the brow with serpent head finials and a central attachment ring. Tall riveted crest holder, the holder shaped as two hands. Ear cutouts on the sides, with a feather socket above them. Curved cheek pieces. Height with cheek pieces 37 cm. Weight with cheek pieces 830 g.
The bronze metal is in an excellent state of preservation without the typical deep corrosion caused by a salty environment, because this helmet has not been unearthed. Dark green noble patina. Stabilised with fibreglass and resin. Supplements in the skull.
This rare helmet belongs to a group of 17 helmets, which were discovered in a cliff deposit (intentionally destroyed and stuck between cracks in the rock) presumably in the Spanish province of Soria (Castille-Leon). To this day, the type and date are not precisely known. Axel Guttmann Collection (AG 356), acquired in 1987/88 in Zürich.
Published in: H.Born, "Restaurierung antiker Bronzewaffen - Sammlung Axel Guttmann", vol. 2, Mainz 1993, example XIV (AG 356). Cf. Hermann Historica, 54th auction, two other helmets of this group, lot 381 (hammer price Euro 25.000), lot 382 (hammer price (Euro 19.000).
