An Augsburg silver tankard,

by master silversmith Lukas Neusser, circa 1630. Silver, partially gold-plated. Cylindrical body with finely chased and chiselled décor in relief. Central portrayal of a triton blowing a conch shell. Surrounded by two fishing mermaids and a playing toddler. The foot with leaf ornaments, the hinged lid with baroque flowers and scrolling leaves. Slender volute handle. The base and lid with Augsburg city mark (Pyr), master's mark "LH", and assayer's mark. Below the lip a surrounding Cyrillic inscription (of later date) reading "Dedicated to the parents of the newborn Alexander Tschepyschew, born 1827., M.G.". Height 15 cm, weight 494 g.
Silver tankard of high quality and excellent condition with original fire gilding. 19 other vessels by Lukas Neusser, who became master silversmith in Augsburg in 1617, are displayed in the collection of the Kremlin Museum in Moscow.
