A narwhal tusk,
Greenland, 20th century. Impressive tusk with beautifully, helically grown structure. Strong tip, beautiful surface with bright patina. Length 243 cm. The narwhal (Monodon monoceros) belongs to the Monodontidae. As early as during the Renaissance the tusks of these marine mammals were thought to be the horns of the legendary unicorn and were attributed to have supernatural powers. CITES certificate available.
