A baroque guild chest

of wheelwrights and blacksmiths, South German, dated 1759. Rectangular body on four flattened ball feet. The front and back with panels bearing inlaid guild symbols between scrolling leaves, the side panels with strapwork and iron handles. Stepped hinged lid, the central sliding lid exposing the keyhole. Elaborate interior with blued fittings. The engraved cover of the lock plate with repeated guild signs, six monograms and the date "Ao. 1759". The sides of the interior fully lined with original paper, the lid decorated with cartouches bearing the names of the guild members and repeated dating. The left side with an open interior compartment above a secret compartment with three small drawers. The right strap hinge labelled "Renoviert 1870 BF-HB". Size 63.5 x 40 x 40.5 cm .
