A Prussian hussar officer's sabre,
ca. 1780. Slightly curved blade with broad fullers, the lower third etched and gilt with trophies and tendrils, obverse a small cartouche with cabalistic signs. Somewhat stained and with rust at the forte. Gold-plated (rubbed) brass knuckle-bow hilt with cross-pieces decorated with rays in relief. Original leather-covered grip with copper wire winding, secured with resin. Leather scabbard with likewise gilt brass fittings. Unexpertly repaired beneath the locket, a break in the lower area, leather with signs of age. Length 95 cm. A similar sabre is illustrated in Windsheimer, Me fecit Potzdam, ills. 561 f.
