A South German hand-pavise
late 15th/early 16th century Rectangular wooden body with rounded corners and broad angular gutter, the outer face line with gessoed canvas painted with the arms of the Bavarian town of Schongau, a black eagle displayed charged with a lozengy shield, all on a dotted ochre ground within a red border. The inner face retaining its original leather covering. With a pair of iron staples for carrying straps and wooden and leather handle retained by four large iron nails. The outer face in generally fine condition with evidence of a late 18th/19th century overpaint about the lower half and edges. The lower half of the inner lining neatly replaced. Height 74 cm. A very similar example was formerly in the collection of the Barons Rothschild and exhibited at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Inv. No. A2286. Cf.
