A South German executioner's sword
(Leutershausen?), circa 1600 Broad blade with a blunt point. Stylised gallows incised on one side. Iron quillons, the arms thicken toward their ends fitted with small finials. Grip with iron wire winding and Turks heads. Smooth iron pear-shaped pommel. Length 103.5 cm. Attached an old label, reinforced with cardboard, bearing a handwritten note concerning provenance: "This executioner's sword comes from our honoured court tribunal at Leutershausen and was given to our grandfather as a memento by Mr. Friedrich Meyer, the mayor, after the court tribunal was dissolved in 1833. 18 July 1859 at Leutershausen" (transl.).
