Malleus Maleficarum (witches hammer)

2nd tome, Lyon 1669
"Mallei maleficarum tractatus aliquot tam veterum, quam recentiorum in unum corpus coacruati", Claudius Bourgeat in Lyon 1669. 322 pages plus index. Title page with etching, some smaller etchings throught the book. Title page with handwritten comments in ink, old inventory stamp from a French cloister library. Heavily worn period leather cover, the back imprinted in gold. Measurements 25 x 19 cm.
First published in 1486 in Speyer, the Hexenhammer is a guidance to which hunting. It describes how to recognise whiches and mages and shows methods for interrogation, torture and punishment. The book has been held responsible for triggering some of the worst excesses of which-trials in the 16th - 18th century.
