Two trophy skulls
Ifugao, Philippines Two male skulls with an even and very deep dark patina. Both lower jaws fastened in place with rattan netting through the nasal opening. Both skulls fastened to an elaborately made carrying harness with additional rattan cords. Both skulls show pronounced signs of age. Heights 17 and 18 cm. The tradition of head hunting was practised by the Ifugao and numerous indigenous tribes of the Pacific region until the beginning of the 20th century when it was finally suppressed by the North Americans. Skull trophies played an important role within the complex social structures of the head hunting tribes.
