An Ottoman silver-mounted kilij

17th/19th centuries
Curved single-edged blade (1st half of the 17th century) of beautifully figured wootz-Damascus with a broadened, double-edged point. The obverse side bears a long inscription from the Koran, inlaid in gold, surrounded by the "Basmala" (first verse of the Koran), and followed by two inscription cartouches and the signature, "Haji Sungar's work". Silver quillons and grip frame with riveted rhinoceros horn grip scales. Wooden scabbard, wound with cord, the middle covered with shagreen leather and sewn with silver wire. Lightly engraved silver mountings with a spring-loaded flap on the back of locket. An engraved inscription and date "1241" (= 1825) on the back of the chape. Length 96 cm.
