A silver-mounted Ottoman yatagan

dated 1819
Typically curved blade with a triple-grooved back, and fine gold inlaid scroll decoration on both sides. The obverse side displays two Koranic surahs and the date "1234" (= 1819). Lavishly worked grip ferrule and straps of gilt silver. Dark horn grip scales. Leather-covered wooden scabbard sewn with silver wire. Minor defects in the upper third. Gilt silver mountings in relief, with the chape in the shape of a dragon's head. Length 78 cm.
