An splendid carved wood casket

Siena, 1849
Hinged lid topped with three-dimensional fruit clusters. Finely carved Renaissance style inlays depicting mythical beasts, portrait cartouches, and animals surrounded by tendril decoration. On the front a clasp lock with unlocking device on the bottom and "J" under crown, inscribed "SIENA 1849". Frame and moulded trims of ebonised wood. The inside lined with red velvet. Size 24.5 x 16 x 13 cm.
