A splendid silver-mounted sabre

for an artillery general, Great Britain, circa 1800
Lightly curved, single-edged blade with fullers on both sides. The upper two thirds bear rich decorative etching with vestiges of gilding against a blued background. On the obverse side a crowned cipher "GR" above a Britannia and the monogram "LM", on the reverse martial trophies and a British coat of arms with a motto above the monogram "GL". On the ricasso marked "Warranted". Richly profiled silver quillons with trophy decoration. Ebony grip with silver wire winding and richly profiled grip strap, pommel shows trophies-of-war and crossed cannons. Length 93.5 cm.
