A Greek-Italic armour

4th century B.C.
A Chalcidian Helmet, 5th/4th Century BC. Heavy, thick-walled bronze helmet with a weak central ridge, offset dome, and short neck-guard. Large ear cutouts with reinforced rims, the rolled helmet rims with notch decoration. Riveted hinge straps. The rectangular cover plates decorated with fish scales and cut wave forms. The brow rim has a double notch border and chiselled wave decoration beneath two holes for a former appliqué. Curved cheekpieces with holes for the chinstraps. A small loop at the back of the neck. Height 21.5 cm. Weight 1523 g. Reddish brown patina, green in places. Heavy helmet with good metal retention. Stabilised inside with fiberglass and resin. Restorations. Axel Guttmann Collection (H 26 / AG 169 to AG 160). Acquired 1989 in Krefeld.
A triple disc armour, 4th century B.C. Two nearly identical bronze plates surrounded with holes, each with three large embossed discs under a reinforcement fitting, richly decorated with leaves and palmettes. Each plate bears two riveted, palmette-shaped flaps for the ring attachments of the shoulder straps (two of the four are present). Bronze plate riveted on the side for the later enlargement of the armour. One armour plate has moveable rings, the other has hinges for attaching the side plates, which bear wave ornamentation. One is still present, the other is an acrylic reconstruction. Ca. 32 x 32 cm. Good metal retention. Reddish-brown and green patina. Stabilised inside with fiberglass and resin. Restorations. A pair of greaves, 5th century B.C. Archaic bronze greaves with a short knee-guard and pronounced central ridge. A deeply contoured and extended calf muscle embossed in relief along the inside. Regularly spaced lining holes, each with two pairs of large holes for the straps. Lengths 36.5 and 37.5 cm. Reddish brown patina. Stabilised on the interior with fiberglass. Somewhat deformed. Restorations. Axel Guttmann Collection (R 149 to AG 160).
Unusual, rare Greek armour with rich decorative elements.
