An Illyrian helmet

6th century B.C.
Bronze Domed skull with a broad crest base distinctly offset by high, strongly contoured ridges. Large face cutout, brow with reinforcing ribs, cheek pieces with holes. Lightly flaring neck-guard, the perimeter of the helmet decorated with lentil-headed rivets (all rivets present!) under a raised reinforcement border. Height 23 cm. Weight 1000 g. Red brown patina, metallic surface in places. Axel Guttmann Collection (no inventory number). Cf. similar helmets from the Axel Guttmann Collection in Hermann Historica's 49th auction, 19 October 2005, lot 159, and Hermann Historica's 54th auction, 11 April 2008, lot 313.
A richly furnished Illyrian helmet in a very fine state of preservation and with beautiful patina.
