A large size photograph of Kaiser Wilhelm II on horseback in the Uniform of the imperial "Schutztruppe". On the lower edge a signed and dated dedication in ink (transl.) "Wilhelm I.R. - 11/XI.98 - To the daughter of, by my late father so very admired and adored, governor of the Lebanon, Franko Pascha". On the photo the stamped date "1898". Foxed. In a fire-gilt, splendid brass frame with laurel border surmounted by the imperial crown, flanked by the imperial and the royal Prussian eagle. A support on the reverse side. Dimensions 46.5 x 25.5 cm.
Nasri Franco Coussa, called Franco Pacha (1814 - 1873) was Ottoman governor of the Lebanon from 1868 to 1873.
Kaiser Wilhelm II visited the Lebanese town Baalbek on 10th/11th November 1898 and gave the decisive impetus for the excavations of German archaeologists in the Lebanon between 1900 and 1904. Due to its ancient Roman monuments Baalbek was elected a world heritage site in 1984. By the time of his visit, the daughter of Franco Pacha was married with Naum Pacha, the reigning Ottoman governor of the Lebanon.
Extremly rare. To our knowledge, both the frame and the photo never have been on offer.
