A Samnite bronze belt,
4th/3rd century B.C. A broad belt with lining holes along the perimeter. The buckle is formed of seven riveted hook closures (two incomplete) in the shape of elongated cicadas. The opposite end has a corresponding set of seven holes arranged in three rows, set in teardrop-shaped bumps. A decorative plate on the side with fine chiselling and remnants of tinning. Length 104 cm. Width 11.5 cm. Weight 696 g. Reddish-brown patina. The back has been largely restored, and stabilised with fiberglass on the inside. Axel Guttmann Collection (AG 632/ R 162). Acquired in Krefeld 1991. Cf. Christie's London, 6 November 2002 auction, lot 77. A beautiful, unusually broad belt for a Samnite warrior.
