Los Nr.2330
Uniformensemble eines Leutnants der Fliegertruppe
Frankreich, Erster Weltkrieg

Please note first that this uniform has the rank of Sous-Lieutenant and not a Lieutenant.
The buttons are from the patent 1917, which means that this uniform was made just before the end of the War. Please note that in the early 1920ies, the uniforms of the French Flying Army will change. For example, the kepi will have embroidery wings.
On the other hand, the ribbons (which are important because you can see the Légion d´Honneur and the Military Medals show the ribbons of the Médaille Inter-Alliés which have been created just after the War) show that it was in use also just after the war.
So, this uniform is typical for the period of WWI, when pilots came from all the other army units (especially the Cavalry, and this black uniform is from the Cavalry), kept their old uniform and just put on the insignias of the Flying Corps. On this one you can see: buttons have been changed, the pilot has put embroidered wings on the collar.
The leather coat is a civil one, which is normal because most of the time they were wearing such coats to fly. Don´t forget that it was the beginning of the Pilot unity and they had no regulation items.
The kepi is a model for an officer of the Cavalry Corps. The unity number which was embroidered has been removed (which is normal) and they put on the gilded wings (called in French "Charognard"). This insignia has been created between 1918 and 1920, just before the new model of Képi with embroidered wings. So, it matches with the decoration and buttons.
The pilot badge is a first model one. 14.000 pilots have been patented during WWI. We can see from the serial number (B 2729) that this pilot has been patented in the year 1916, because the numbers 2000 to 3000 were given in 1916. We have already asked the French Air Historical Service and they will send us the name of the pilote and his pedigree.
He keeps on his uniform a "fantasy" insignia which the pilote wore as a first pilot badge. The wings gilded, this was a costume jewellery made by a jeweller called "FIX". On the back you could find the name FIX
We have here a uniform of a French officer of the Cavalry, who was assigned to the Pilot Corps Unity, certainly in the year 1916 (because he has been patented in this year). This explication matches with the rest of the uniform, especially the buttons (1917 regulation). This pilot wore his uniform during the WWI and also just after the end of WWI, we can see that with the buttons
