A French miniature painting of St. Francis
2nd half of the 15th century Oil on gilded copper. A half portrait of the saint with a finely drawn impressive face in a brown cowl. He is holding a book with the inscription "V-S F-E" in his left hand, the right is raised in admonition. Stigmata on both hands. In a silver frame provided with a small loop for hanging. Dimensions 9 x 7 cm. Francis of Assisi (1181/82 - 1226), founder of the Franciscan Order, was declared a saint in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX.
