A Late Gothic French lock

circa 1500
Beautiful openwork, rectangular lock plate of blackened iron, bearing beautifully cut architectural tracery in the centre. The openwork backed with blue-coloured parchment. Enclosed by a corded rim. Four diamond-shaped fastening holes. Horizontal bolt, with the knob cut in the shape of a fool's head. There is a flat casing on the back with an intact ward. Key missing. Dimensions 11 x 12.5 cm.
