A combined flintlock/air gun,

Wentzlau, Neuwied, circa 1740. Octagonal barrel becoming round with a smooth bore in 10.5 mm calibre, engraved brass front sight and replacement iron rear sight, and ornamental engraving (worn) on the breech. Engraved flintlock. The lockplate is signed, "Wentzlau a Neuwied No 61". There is a screw running through the powder pan to close the vent for use as an air gun. Set trigger. Lightly carved walnut half stock with horn nose cap. Brass furniture with remnants of gilding, finely engraved with ornamental and hunting designs. There is a spring-loaded cover on the butt plate for pumping up the air reservoir in the butt stock. Iron pieces somewhat stained. Length 147 cm.
Wentzlau, Neuwied/Koblenz known 1747 - 84. Court gunsmith to the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt.
