A Late Gothic French courier's box

circa 1500
A rectangular box of leather-covered wood. Hinged lid with iron straps. The hoop ends are cut with Late Gothic bow decoration. The lid bears a brass plaque with the monogram "ae" in Gothic minuscule. There are two iron loops for straps on each side, one missing. Lock in front has a cut hasp. The leather surfaces have finely cut and embossed line and vine ornamentation. The interior is lined with dark brown leather. Leather cover has minor damage. Key missing. Dimensions 25 x 19 x 11 cm.
