Otto Schubert (1892 - 1972)
"The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" Oil on canvas. The four horsemen Famine, War, Plague and Death in front of a backdrop of ominous clouds, below fear-stricken people feebly trying to escape. Stretcher frame, picture size 110 x 130 cm. This painting is clearly reminiscient of Albrecht Dürer, who dedicated a series of woodcuts in 1498 to the apocalypse as described in John, chapter 6, verse 1 - 8, a section of the bible dealing with the appearance of the horsemen. As a young man, Otto Schubert took part in World War I and was severely wounded. He studied at the Art Academy in Dresden and was a master pupil of Gussmann and Hettner. He was also cofounder of the Dresden Secession.
