Thurnierbuch (tournament book)

G. Rüxner, Frankfurt 1579
"Of the beginnings, causes, origins and development of the tournament in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation" (transl.). Two parts in one volume. Title printed in red and black, 315 leaves plus 12 leaves with prefaces and index. More than 400, partially half-page woodcuts by Jost Amman, in both parts the famous, double-page tournament scene. Later supplemented with (transl.) "Farewell of the Roman Imperial Majesty and the representatives of the estates after the Imperial Diet in Augsburg", Mainz 1582. Engraved frontispiece, 47 leaves and one leaf preface.
Original wood binding covered with embossed leather and intact book clasps. Front with monogram "HHB 1584". Leather cover partially restored with minor additions.
Very well preserved, clean copy of the much sought standard work.
