A silver-mounted Ottoman kilij

circa 1860
Heavy, beautifully patterned wootz Damascus blade with a broad double-edged point and cut back. Gold-inlaid wormwood leaf decoration on both sides of the ricasso with a cartouche inscription on the reverse side, "There is no hero other than Ali, and no sword like Dhulfakar". The opposite side bears the call to prayer. Silver quillons with floral engraving. Two rhinoceros horn grip scales. Wooden scabbard covered with silver-sewn, shagreen leather. The tughra of Sultan Abdul Mejid (1839 - 61) is stamped on the silver locket and the suspension bars, all engraved en suite. Wootz Damascus chape fittings with geometric, gold inlay lightly worn. Beautiful sabre in good condition. Length 87 cm.
