Sophie-Marie Duchess of Baden

a traveling paint box, Deforge & Carpentier, Paris, circa 1880
Lavishly worked walnut case with several levels and with surrounding brass bands. Ornamental brass inlays in Boulle technique on the lid, displaying the ducal coronet above an alloy "SM". In the lid, a (slightly cracked) palette of bird's-eye maple. Inside a removable box with an iron water container, a porcelain mix holder, a brush, and a variety of large, ivory painting surfaces. In front and on the side there are two lockable drawers with colours, charcoal pencils, drawing paper, and a set-up drawing board. Later, somewhat bent key. Fine quality and condition. Dimensions 47 x 33 x 24.5 cm.
Sophie-Marie Duchess of Baden married Leopold-Frederic Duke of Anhalt in 1889.
