a traveler's vanity case with a drawer for toilette articles and writing
Implements dark green, pebbled leather with the stamped cipher "MM" under a coronet and gilded, engraved brass furniture. The top drawer locks with a snap latch, and has four inner pockets. Two exterior side pockets, one lockable. There is a wooden drawer built in to the bottom to take the containers for toiletries and writing implements. Lockable wooden insert with two leather covered insets and an storage tray. In the bottom drawers for brushes and combs with three brushes, a storage tray with ten utensils for daily use, such as scissors, pen knife, and button hooks, some with mother-of-pearl handles. Leather covered inserts with various glass bottles and containers. Mirror in the lid. Leather covered ink bottle, matchbox and pen holder. The cut and polished glass containers are of lead crystal mounted with silver. The silver mounting has an engraved crowned cipher, "MA" and the Petersburg hallmark for "84" zolotniki and the silver smith's mark. As a whole in very good condition with signs of use. Two lock hasps are removed (present), three glass containers have minor splintering, and the lifting handle for the ink bottle is broken. One key for every lock. Size of the case 45 x 23 x 43 cm.
Marie Maximilianovna Princess Romanovka, Duchess zu Leuchtenberg, born 1841 married Duke Wilhelm of Baden in 1863.
