A presentation hunting hanger

"Prize for Good Range Estimation 1897"
"Won by Oberjäger Herke of the 3rd Company of the Hanover Jäger Battalion No. 10." The ridged blade has an etched dedication on the obverse side between vines, ibex, and falcons, the reverse side has chamois, fox, and capercaille. The back has etched floral decoration and the maker's name, "G. Berlin" over the ricasso. The brass hilt has a shell guard plate, remnants of gilding and three decorative acorns on the stag horn grip. Leather covered wooden scabbard with the owner's name engraved as above on the locket. The bye-knife with stag horn grip scales is probably a replacement. Length: 53 cm.
