Lot Nr.530

A cased pair of percussion dueling pistols

W.M. Mach, Prague around 1850
Each has a smooth bore Damascus barrel in 13 mm calibre without front or rear sights. There is delicately engraved wave decoration on top of the barrel, floral cartouches and the gold inlaid signature. "W.:M:MACH IN PRAG" (one muzzle has light marks where it has been hit). The tangs with delicate floral engraving are numbered "1" and "2" in gold. The percussion locks and iron furniture are engraved en suite. Walnut half stocks with fluted butts. Length of each: 44 cm. In a velvet lined wooden case with complete accessories (except for the oil container) and key. The velvet on the lid has faded in two places.
Extremly rare set of cased duelers. Contrary to the long held opinion that all cased percussion pistols were designed for the duel, dueling codes in Germany and Austria ruled smooth bores without sights and set triggers as obligatory.
